After a family reduced in size, the house was divided to create an annexe apartment. To do so, two doors were filled in, while one narrow and one broad window were opened to become passages to the extension. It houses the infrastructure, consisting of an entrance with a cloakroom closet, a kitchen and a shower/WC. A 1.5 m wide strip of land is available for the extension between the existing house and the required distance to the neighbouring properties: the result is a volume with the same breadth, 10 m length, a 6 m height, plus two bay windows. Key facts: the concrete base is grey, like the painted base of the existing house. The narrow timber cladding is painted white, like the plaster of the existing house. Its simple finishing is reflected in the extension. The alignment of the kitchen bay window lengthens its apparent perspective. Its twisted form guides the view into the depth of the neighbouring garden. The skylight on the northwest corner provides light for the small bathroom in the morning and evening. The perforated sheet metal with a round outlet in front of the shower/WC window refers to the common decorative window grilles of the existing house. Distinction rather than reduction. The house and the new apartment each have their own entrance and access to the garden. Small architectural measures in the garden – implying a wide range of possibilities – reflect the inner partition outside.
